A free online character counter for everyday writing

Whether you are preparing a social media caption, refining a meta description, editing an email or drafting a short bio, character limits can change how you write. This counter shows your text length as you work, without requiring an account.

01

Write for social media

Check caption and profile text lengths, then use a custom limit appropriate to the platform and field you are writing for.

02

Optimize snippets

Draft concise SEO titles and meta descriptions. Remember that search result truncation depends on rendered width, not a universal character limit.

03

Edit professional copy

Keep application answers, summaries, ad copy and messages within a specified maximum length.

Understanding the numbers

Characters vs words: what is counted?

Different platforms may count text differently. This tool uses the following definitions so you can interpret the results correctly.

MetricHow it worksExample
Characters with spacesCounts visible characters and whitespace using Unicode code points.“Hello world” = 11
Characters without spacesRemoves whitespace before counting characters.“Hello world” = 10
WordsCounts groups separated by whitespace.“Hello world” = 2
SentencesEstimates sentences using punctuation (. ! ? and equivalents) and nonempty text.“Hello! How are you?” = 2
Reading timeEstimates using 200 words per minute.200 words ≈ 1 minute

Note: Some services count UTF-16 units, bytes, or emoji sequences differently. The counter is useful for drafting, but a platform’s own field validation is authoritative.

Writing tips

How to shorten text without losing meaning

A

Lead with the message

Put the most important information first. Remove opening phrases that delay the point.

B

Replace long phrases

Prefer direct words such as “use” instead of “make use of” when the shorter wording keeps the meaning.

C

Check the final field

After editing, paste your copy into its destination and confirm that the platform accepts the length and formatting.

Frequently asked questions

Character counter FAQs

Does the character counter include spaces?

Yes. The main character total includes whitespace, and a second metric excludes whitespace so you can compare both counts.

Does this tool count emoji?

Yes, using Unicode code points. Some emoji consist of multiple code points and may count differently on other platforms.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

The counter processes text locally in your browser. The tool’s JavaScript does not send the text to an API. Your browser, extensions and website infrastructure may have their own separate behavior.

Can I set my own character limit?

Yes. Enter a positive number in the Custom limit field. The progress indicator will show how much of the limit you have used.

Is there a universal character limit for SEO meta descriptions?

No. Search snippets depend on display width and Google’s choices. Use concise, accurate descriptions instead of relying on a fixed character threshold.

How is reading time calculated?

The estimate uses 200 words per minute and rounds up to whole seconds. Actual reading speed varies by audience and content.
